3-Year Teacher Training Program
We are thrilled to be partnering with local Tanzanian non-profit, Education Progress Initiatives "EPI" to offer ongoing mentorship and support to the dedicated teachers at Kisimani School. EPI is committed to unlocking the innate potential of teachers and students through mentorship, accountability and access to additional resources. You can learn more about them in their slideshow here.
Friends of Kisimani has agreed to offer financial support to the cost of offering this continuing education to our teachers for 3 years, and the annual budget is estimated to be about $1,000/month. We began in January of 2022, and are thrilled to continue for another year!
Girls' Privacy Room
In 2021, a group of female teachers at Kisimani School put together a detailed proposal to build an extension onto on of the classrooms dedicated to a private changing area for menstruating students. Often, these students will be sent home when they begin their periods, unnecessarily missing days of school due to a shortage of clean uniforms should one need to be washed, and access to sanitary pads and supplies. This room is designed to keep all students in school, every month, throughout the whole month. As of October 2021, construction is complete and we are still looking for partners and funding to stock the room with sanitary supplies.
School Supplies
Every year, Friends of Kisimani accepts proposals from the teachers and staff at Kisimani School to make sure we are addressing the needs of teachers and students through additional resources. This year, we accepted proposals for additional Science materials, and received many in-kind donations from our pre-school sponsor, long-term volunteer, and board member, Trish McWhorter.
While we appreciate the many offers to donate books, resources and school supplies from abroad, we prioritize purchasing educational materials locally as often as possible, both in service of the local economy as well as modeling solutions that are duplicable for other neighboring schools.
